Harvest Café Community Makeover
After running her family business, the Harvest Café, for 15 years, Kim Foster attended a local women’s business leaders group in Simsbury,
introducing herself to the group by saying she said she felt very lucky to be getting by in this tough economy. But she has to sell a lot of eggs to make a profit. She acknowledged that Harvest needed a significant amount of work inside—both cosmetic updates and more urgent issues that were becoming safety concerns. Her budget did not allow for the upgrades as her corporate catering business had dropped significantly, and it would be years before she could afford to make improvements without raising prices or laying off staff. (Harvest employs 30 people because all of their baked goods are made from scratch.) The group agreed that Harvest had delicious food and amazing service, but that it could use a fresh look inside…so they put their minds to work.
Barbara Kaylor, co-owner of RE/MAX Communities, contacted some local contractors to see if they would be willing to donate their time and services to help improve the neighborhood cafe. She also helped round up some friends and loyal customers to help with the manual
labor. With the help of 65 generous volunteers the makeover is
complete! We hope you enjoy the results.
